In Ontario, there are various levels of senior living care available, ranging from independent living to more specialized care. Let’s dive into a comparison of independent living, assisted living, memory care, and home care.
Senior living options in Ontario
Independent living
Description: Independent living is a type of senior living community that is designed for seniors who can manage their daily routines without assistance from others. Independent living typically offers apartment-style accommodations with added features such as safety railings and emergency call systems.
Pros:
- All maintenance and upkeep of the building and grounds is performed by the community staff and is included in the monthly fee.
- Seniors can maintain their independence.
- Organized events, clubs, and outings help residents to have an active social life.
- It’s a senior housing option that can be less expensive than some other options if minimal care is needed.
Cons:
- It’s not suitable for those who need regular medical attention or help with their activities of daily living, like bathing, grooming, dressing, and managing their medications.
Assisted living
Description: Assisted living is a type of senior living community that is designed for seniors who need some assistance with performing their daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, or taking medications but do not require more intensive medical care.
Pros:
- Residents can maintain their independence by receiving just the assistance they need
- Care staff are on-site to address any health concerns.
- A schedule of social activities and communal areas within the community foster interaction among the residents.
Cons:
- It’s more expensive than independent living due to the additional care provided.
- Communities might not provide the level of care required for seniors with significant health issues.

Memory care
Description: Memory care communities, often found within or on the same campus as large senior living communities, provide specialized caring and assistance for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.
Pros:
- Staff are trained in dementia care, providing support tailored for each resident.
- Enhanced safety and security measures are in place for the peace of mind of the residents and their loved ones.
- Residents participate in activities and therapies designed to either stimulate or soothe them.
Cons:
- It’s more expensive than other types of senior living due to the specialized care provided.
- The environment’s safety and security measures can feel restrictive.
Home care
Description: Home care allows seniors to receive personalized care in their own homes. This can range from companionship and basic help around the house to medical care.
Pros:
- Seniors can stay in familiar surroundings.
- Care is flexible and tailored to the individual’s specific needs.
- It may be more cost-effective than senior living options for those needing only minimal support.
Cons:
- The social interaction can be limited.
- Care quality can vary depending on the service provider.
- It may not be feasible cost-wise for those requiring 24/7 care. (Government-funded home care is available but limited.)
Variations
Sometimes you may encounter a senior living community that offers support that doesn’t fit neatly within any of the first three categories (independent living, assisted living, or memory care). For instance, at Levante Living we offer something we call independent supportive living. Essentially, it’s independent living with options to add customized à la carte care services.
The difference between assisted living and independent supportive living, is that assisted living often comes bundled as a complete price – you often cannot pick and choose the services you need. We recognize that everyone is unique and should not have to pay for services they don’t need.
