Understanding the Levels of Residential Senior
Living Care In Ontario

Life at Levante begins with understanding the levels of care that are available to you. We’ve provided the following descriptions of care to help guide you through the process of deciding what will be best for you and your family, followed by a short description of what A Day In the Life of a Levante Resident includes and the kind of quality care you can expect at a Levante Living Residence.

INDEPENDENT LIVING

Independent Living caters to seniors (generally 55 years and older) who have no major health issues and who do not need assistance with activities of daily living such as grooming, personal care and eating. Facilities in this category can range from 1-2 bedroom city condos to elegant campuses with luxury amenities including golf courses and gourmet dining. Although services vary, the advantages of living in Independent Living may include freedom from home and lawn maintenance, housekeeping, transportation (if desired), prepared meals, spa/hair salon, games room and activities with other residents. Residents come and go as they please. These communities are typically private pay and can vary greatly depending on location and amenities provided.

ASSISTED LIVING

Seniors who opt for Assisted Living enjoy the independence of having their own place, but need or would like a little help to handle the tasks of daily living such as grooming, bathing, housekeeping, medication assistance, and meal preparation. Many of the same benefits you find in Independent living can be found here along with round the clock care if needed. Accommodations can range from suites to 1-2 bedrooms. Rather than a full kitchen, these generally have kitchenettes as meals are usually taken in a dining room. As with Independent Living, these accommodations are private pay and vary depending on location and amenities provided.

MEMORY CARE

Memory Care is specifically designed to meet the needs of seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, and other memory related diseases. Although in the past, care for these individuals has typically taken place in a secure area or wing of an existing Assisted Living or Long Term Care Home, there are now dedicated homes/residences that have been and are being developed solely to care for those with memory issues. The security of these homes are designed to prevent residents from wandering off and becoming lost, which is a common and dangerous symptom of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. The security usually takes the form of alarmed exit doors rather than locked exit doors. Although services can vary, care is usually available 24 hours a day and all meals are provided in a dining room. Residents can live in apartments or private/semi private rooms. Memory Care is available for private pay. Due to the higher amount of security and care, it is often more expensive than Independent/Assisted Living

LONG TERM CARE

For those seniors who need extra care, subsidized nursing home residences are available through government LTC programs. These homes are for those who can no longer safely live on their own and require around the clock care. Availability can be limited and it is advised that seniors who feel that they may require this kind of care in the future visit the respective homes in their area and put their name on the wait list. Entry into a LTC residence must be made through the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) and is often on a first come, first serve basis. The cost of a Long Term Care residence is usually shared between the client and the Ministry of Health with has formulas in place to determine the amount each client contributes.

A Day In The Life

Most seniors who make the transition from home to an Assisted Living residence wonder what life will be like in their new home. Will they make new friends? Will they get the kind of quality care they need? Will the food be good? We are here to put those worries to rest. The staff at each Levante Residence will be happy to listen to and resolve those concerns. This new season of life should be one of the best.
