Independent Living.

Independent living caters to seniors (generally 55 years and older) who have no major health issues and who do not need assistance with activities of daily living such as grooming, personal care, and eating.

Facilities in this category can range from one- to two-bedroom city condos to elegant campuses with luxury amenities, including golf courses and gourmet dining. Although services vary, the advantages of living in independent living may include freedom from home and lawn maintenance, housekeeping, transportation (if desired), prepared meals, spa/hair salons, and activities with other residents.

Independent living residents come and go as they please. These communities are typically private pay and can vary greatly depending on the location and amenities provided.

Assisted Living.

Seniors who opt for assisted living enjoy the independence of having their own place but benefit from a little help to handle the tasks of daily living (such as grooming, bathing, housekeeping, medication assistance, and meal preparation). Many of the same benefits you find in independent living can be found here, along with round-the-clock care if needed.

Assisted living accommodations can range from suites to one- and two-bedroom apartments. Rather than a full kitchen, these generally have kitchenettes as meals are usually taken in a dining room. As with independent living, assisted living accommodations are typically private pay and vary depending on location and amenities provided.

Memory Care.

Memory care is specifically designed to meet the needs of seniors with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other memory related conditions. In the past, care for these individuals typically took place in a secure area or wing of an existing assisted living or long-term care home. Nowadays, dedicated residences exist solely to care for those with memory issues.

The security of these homes is designed to prevent residents from wandering off and becoming lost, which is a common and dangerous symptom of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. Memory care security measures usually take the form of alarmed exit doors, unobtrusive sensors, and consistent staff monitoring. Although services can vary, care is usually available 24 hours a day and all meals are provided in a dining room setting. Residents can live in apartments or private/semiprivate rooms.

Memory Care is available for private pay. Due to the higher amount of security and care, it is often more expensive than independent and assisted living

Respite Care, Short-Term Stays, and Convalescent Care.

Sometimes, you had a need for senior living and care that’s temporary in nature. Maybe you have a gap in your typical home health coverage and need to get quality care to address any lapses and ensure you continue to live in comfort and safety. Maybe you need some extra support and assistance while you recover from an injury, illness, surgery, or hospitalization.

When these issues happen, a respite care or convalescent stay at a senior living community can offer you an ideal solution to your daily care coverage needs. Respite and convalescent care stays allow you to access all the services, amenities, and support of a senior living community for the time period you need to recuperate and make a full recovery.

Short-term stays allow you to try out a senior living community before you commit to moving in. This type of stay allows you to get the full senior living experience and decide if a specific senior living community is right for you. These flexible, temporary stay options are ideal to cover a variety of senior living and care needs.
